Spot! Background Story
Spot! Background Story
Jake and I set out to create a solution that would help college students and their friends discover affordable attractions and connect with one another, while on a budget. Through our research we discovered that students at Farmingdale State College on Long Island are often unaware of affordable attractions nearby. While commuter students are more familiar with local options, many dorm students were less informed. We also discovered a lack of connection between commuter and dorm students, limiting opportunities to create meaningful relationships.
With all of these insights in mind, we developed Spot, a mobile application designed to address these challenges. Spot aims to help students explore local attractions, develop friendships between commuter and dorm students, keep track of schedules, and create a memorable experience while being mindful of their budget!

Jake and I shared an interest in discovering new places nearby. As a dorm student new to the area, I wanted to explore rather than stay in my room.
However, I often struggled to find affordable attractions, coordinate schedules with friends, and secure transportation.
We noticed that finding an area within our budget range was the most difficult, and many of us didn't have a car; we relied on taking Uber, Lyft or carpooling with a friend.

To better understand our audience, Jake and I conducted interviews with students. I focused on dorm students, while Jake interviewed commuters with and without a car. Since I lived on campus it was easier for me to gather insights from suitemates and other students nearby.
We interviewed nine students to determine whether dorm students were aware of affordable attractions nearby or if commuters had better knowledge of them. Here's what students said:

When designing our surveys, we focused on the three groups identified from our interviews: dorm students, commuters with a car, and commuters who use public transit.
Jake and I received 66 Survey Responses, with 23 from dorm students.
We found that dorm students frequently struggled to coordinate hangouts with friends, and many were unaware of affordable attractions near their dorms
39.1% expressed difficulties with friend availability as a major challenge when making plans.

After analyzing all of our data we decided to focus on our main audience being dorm students and commuters with a car. This decision was based on the insight that commuters using public transit shared similar challenges with dorm students, particularly a lack of awareness about nearby attractions.

Creating an app with these features:
Have affordable attractions displayed each week or day
Student Discounts available nearby or a section to make friends with other people who dorm or commute to campus
Scheduling Section for friend availability
Section where students are traveling to places and can offer to take people there
Increase friendships with one another
Ex: getting boba, offering rides
Confirm they’re a student at FSC (RAM ID, Name, Year, Major etc.)

In the initial stages, we both created compositions to visualize our early ideas for the application. However, in our second semester, we refined and iterated on our designs significantly.
During the first semester, we developed initial concepts of the app’s interface, which we later transformed into mid-fidelity wireframes as the project evolved.
Below showcased the Home Screen, Friend's Schedule, Limited Offers, and Rams Transport a way for students to offer rides for others also going to the same attraction as them.

Spot! was one of my very first full hi-fidelity projects I worked on. It went through plentiful iterations and helped me grow as a UI/UX Designer. I’m thankful I was able to learn from my mistakes and understand the full process. This is a project where I was super happy with the turn out!
However I would love to fix up the entire design and create something better than what I’ve displayed. I know with my current skills and expertise now I can develop an even more amazing iteration.
The main focus of Spot! is to connect college students based on their schedules and interests. The mobile app allows users to input their class schedules and extracurricular activities and then find friends who have similar free time. Users can plan outings and adventures with their friends and coordinate transportation to events.
Our design team used an iterative design process, gathering feedback from users and making improvements to the app based on their input. We also conducted user testing to evaluate the app's usability, functionality, and overall user experience.
